Terrorism Experts Give Briefing On Present-Day Threat At NYPD Conference
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Security organizations from major companies gathered at police headquarters Tuesday for a briefing on the present-day terror threat.
As 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported, NYPD intelligence analysts gave a step-by-step account of the horrific Paris terrorist attack, replaying a series of videos.
"The active shooter scenario is an easy and inexpensive way to achieve an enormous payoff and profile, particularly when it involves hostage taking and multiple simultaneous incidents against soft targets," analyst Jordan Carpenter said.
Former CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell said the "lone wolf" terrorist threat to the United States has never been greater.
But as WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, Morell also named al Qaeda and Yemen in South Asia and the Khorasan group in Syria as terror organizations presenting an even greater threat to the U.S.
"Those three organizations can bring a complex attack to our shores that could kill a hundred, they would likely focus on airplanes," he said.
Morell went on to say that if any one of them was able to bring down an airliner tomorrow in the U.S., he would not be surprised, underlining they have that capability.
On Saturday, a gunman opened fire on a Copenhagen cultural center, killing one man and wounding three police officers in what authorities called a terror attack against a free speech event featuring an artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad.
