Teen Building 9/11 Memorial In Front Of Haworth Fire Department
HAWORTH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A high school senior is building a 9/11 memorial in Haworth.
The work by Kyle Pavlik, a 17-year-old Bergen Catholic High School student, uses three pieces of twisted, rusted World Trade Center steel and is displayed in front of the Haworth Fire Department, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.
The monument is Pavlik's Eagle Scout project. He hopes to complete it by next month's 9/11 anniversary.
"Two pieces standing up to symbolize that the towers will be forever standing in our hearts," Pavlik explained.
The third piece is horizontal.
The memorial will honor first responders who died in the attacks.
"I'm an active firefighter," Pavlik said. "My father's been an active firefighter for almost 35 years."
Pavlik's mother, Diane, said she is impressed.
"We are so proud of him," she said.
Pavlik was just 4 years old on Sept. 11, 2001.
"I remember sitting there eating my cereal when the first plane hit," he said.
