Teen Arrested In New Brunswick, Linked To Robberies Around Rutgers
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A juvenile suspect was arrested in New Brunswick, New Jersey this week, and has been linked by police to robberies around Rutgers University.
The suspect was arrested in connection with a robbery that happened on Wednesday at Neilson and Morris streets in New Brunswick, local police said. The suspect was charged with robbery and possession of stolen property, police said.
During an investigation, the suspect was found to have property taken from victims in two separate robberies that happened over the past month, police said.
Police believe the Wednesday incident was related to other robberies, and were investigating along with Rutgers University police detectives, police said.
The suspect was also found to have a fake gun that matched a weapon description given by a robbery victim, police said.
Last month, police were investigating a rash of robberies on and near the Rutgers campus. In one incident, a student was violently beaten and robbed on campus 10 days ago before the suspects used his credit card at a convenience store in Woodbridge.
Police say the suspects drove a brown BMW.
The following week, police were alerted of an attempted armed robbery occurred at the intersection of Union and Mine streets.
Police say a man approached a student walking along Mine Street and demanded cash and valuables, but the student said he didn't have anything. The man then took off running. The student was not injured.
It was the second robbery on campus within nearly a week, CBS2's Matt Kozar reported.
Police on Friday did not indicate whether the juvenile suspect arrested this week was linked specifically to any of the previously-reported robberies.
