Teen Accused In UWS Accident That Killed Girl, 4, Now Charged With Looting Apartment
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The teen accused in a traffic accident that left a 4-year-old girl dead on the Upper West Side last year has now been accused of looting an apartment along with his father.
As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, Franklin Reyes, 18, was charged along with his 45-year-old father – also named Franklin Reyes – of looting an apartment in a building on West 21st Street where his father works as the superintendent.
Police alleged the father-son duo swiped $2,000 worth of jewelry, cash and electronics from a tenant who had died of brain cancer.
The alleged heist on June 5 came one day after the one-year anniversary of the date when the younger Reyes was accused of running down Ariel Russo at 97th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
Ariel died after an SUV jumped a curb on Amsterdam Avenue while the she was walking to school with her grandmother in June of last year.
Authorities said Reyes was driving a sport-utility vehicle, had only a learner's permit and was being chased by police just prior to the crash.
He has been charged with manslaughter in that that case and has now been charged with petit larceny.
The New York Daily News reported the younger Reyes said, "Shut up, shut up!" when asked for comment.
