Tappan Zee Bridge Makes Switch To Cashless Tolls

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Drivers who don't have an E-ZPass can now cross the Tappan Zee Bridge without getting stuck in long, slow lines at the toll plaza.

Starting Sunday, money is no longer collected at toll booths. The toll plaza in Tarrytown will be torn down in pieces.

The bridge is now using high-speed E-Z sensors on the Rockland side, WCBS 880's Sean Adams. For the 20 percent of drivers without E-ZPass, cameras will record their license plate number, and a bill will be sent in the mail. Anyone who has five unpaid tolls over 18 months will have his or her registration suspended.

But do drivers think it will help ease traffic?

"Going right through at 20 (mph)? Definitely help," said one man.

"I suppose it will help. I just think it's too much traffic," another said.

"Maybe a little," one woman said.
