Cable Work Expected To Start On New Tappan Zee Bridge Next Month
TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The new Tappan Zee Bridge is getting ready to mark another milestone.
First concrete columns sprouted up from the Hudson River, then horizontal blue steel girders linked up across the river to form the deck support.
Next month, they'll start stringing cables for the new twin spans.
"People will be gawking. It's going to be and interesting thing to see that we haven't seen in New York," said Thruway Interim Executive Director Maria Lineman.
The toll plaza is also gone. Cameras have been recording licence plates since April and drivers without E-ZPass will soon get bills in the mail. Those who don't pay will have their registration suspended.
The nearly $4 million bridge is expected to be completed in 2018.
