Sources: Suspected carjacker fatally shot by Paterson police officer

Paterson community shaken by latest deadly shooting

PATERSON, N.J. -- A Paterson, New Jersey neighborhood is deeply shaken after another deadly shooting. People who live there say enough is enough.

People walking down Van Houten Street on Monday shook their head at yet another crime scene - the third deadly shooting on the street this year.

The gunfire involved police and an accused carjacker, CBS2's Kevin Rincon reported.

The lead investigator is the state attorney general's office. It said a carjacking thief was shot and killed at around 5 p.m. Monday.

"It's not safe at all, in this environment, in Paterson itself," said Shavetta Frazier.

"I live around here and I work right there. So it's crazy," another woman said.

People who live in the area are getting more and more concerned.

"Now in this day and age it's been happening every day. Something is going on, somebody is dying, somebody is getting killed, somebody is getting mugged, somebody is getting robbed or beat up. I'm gonna walk home by myself," said another Paterson resident.

While it's not clear where or how the car was stolen, sources said the suspect was killed by a Paterson police officer.

"It's getting bad out here. People don't have jobs. People are doing things like stealing and what just happened here just to try to survive," said another woman.

Video from Chopper 2 showed where the carjacking ended and what appeared to be a separate crime scene a block away. Law enforcement officials have not shared details.

For now, the suspect's death is being classified as a homicide, but that could change once the investigation is complete.
