Suspect in critical condition following police-involved shooting in Bronx

Man shot by police after they say he refused to drop weapon

NEW YORK -- A man was shot by police on Sunday afternoon after they say he refused to drop his weapon.

Investigators say the incident happened at around 2:30 p.m. in the Bronx, adding five officers were approached by a 60-year-old woman at Grand Concourse and East 153rd Street and said a man attacked her.

The officers caught up with the man, but said he refused to stop.

At one point, they say he pulled out a gun and pointed it at someone. When officers ordered him to drop the weapon, he wouldn't.

"He puts gun to his head then turned on officers. Officers opened fire, hitting him," NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said.

The 49-year-old suspect is currently in critical condition and the woman who was attacked was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

No officers were injured.
