Super Bowl Fans Leave Behind Jewelry, Electronics, More At Newark Liberty

UNION, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Some tourists who visited the area for Super Bowl XLVIII fumbled valuable belongings at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Transportation Security Administration officials in Union are sorting through the many items left behind at security checkpoints or as a result of travelers being stranded by the snow Monday.

"Some driver's licenses, some identifications," the TSA's Ofelia Ruiz described to WCBS 880's Ginny Kosola. "You have some belts. You have a laptop over there."

Also forgotten were jewelry, electronics, coats, keys, a Super Bowl gift bag and even a suitcase.

"I'm guessing those are the ones that are in a rush to not miss their flights," Ruiz speculated about the suitcase.

As CBS 2's Maggie Ruper reported, the lost-and-found also includes some odd items, such as a large jar of honey and a diamond engagement ring.

The TSA keeps inventory of the items and can identify them by date, the location where they were found and description.

"If there are multiple items that may be similar, we'll ask the customer to send a photo or any proof that that is theirs, and we'll be glad to ship it out to them," Ruiz said.

Air travelers may retrieve their belongings within 30 days by calling 908-787-0667 or emailing ewrlostandfound@panynj.gov. Unclaimed items could end up in a TSA warehouse.

For future reference, Ruiz recommended that people flying with electronics attach a business card to them in the event they are lost.

"If you have a business card, I guarantee you that before you call us, we will call you," she said.
