Sunset Park Residents Opposed To Planned Expansion of Affordable Housing Heckle Speakers
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As Attorney General Eric Schneiderman stood on the sidewalk in front of the Sunset Park Library, describing the new $25 million project about to begin, he was heckled by residents opposed to the venture.
"A new expanded library will soon rise here topped by 50 truly affordable apartments," Schneiderman said.
But a number of community residents were having none of it, WCBS 880' Rich Lamb reports.
Claiming the project was sprung on them, they shouted at Schneiderman and Borough President Eric Adams as they spoke.
"This is going to be a bigger library," Adams said. "This is going to be a place where our children can understand that they can get the opportunities that they deserve."
Resident Abe Mercado doesn't like the housing nor the libraries being closed for 18 months.
"Why not somewhere else? Not here," Mercado insisted.
