Here's How To Stay Safe At The Beach This Summer
LONG ISLAND (CBSNewYork) -- The beaches on Long Island are popular places to go during the summer, but as WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reports, you want to go there and be safe.
From Jones Beach to Robert Moses State Park, there are plenty of places to spend the lazy days of summer -- but sadly every year we hear of tragedies happening in the water.
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said to make sure your child has taken swim lessons.
"Don't fight the current," Murray added. "Don't think that you're going to be able to power swim your way out of it. An Olympic swimmer could not fight their way out of a rip current."
Here's what you should do instead.
"Swim parallel to the sea shore," Murray said. "You will get out of the rip current that way or if you're tired, or if you're not a strong enough swimmer, just float. Simply by floating, the current will actually push you out of the riptide."
