Suffolk Police: 10 Arrested At Sobriety Checkpoint In Huntington Station
Huntington Station, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Officials said 10 people were arrested during an overnight sobriety checkpoint in the Huntington Station area of Long Island.
New York State Troopers assisted the Suffolk County Highway Patrol Bureau Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team with the checkpoint at Route 110.
Police said the checkpoint was put in place in an attempt to prevent injuries and fatalities associated with drunken and impaired driving due to the Halloween weekend.
One person, 34-year-old Mario Cruz, was arrested and charged with felony driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law. Cruz was also charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.
Eight other arrestees -- Thomas Callaghan, 45; Michael Mahoney, 67; Nick Vitucci, 31; James Briner, 35; Maxwell Kaestner, 21; Thomas Petrizzo, 39; Ruslan Nazmutdinov, 27; Martha Suarez, 23 -- were charged with DWI, police said.
One person, 30-year-old Roberto Vargas, was charged with driving while ability impaired by a combined influence of drugs and alcohol, police said.
All 10 are expected to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
Police said a total of 562 vehicles went through the checkpoint.
