Suffolk Hate Crimes Unit Investigating Swastika Graffiti On Dix Hills Home
DIX HILLS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Suffolk County police are investigating after graffiti, including a symbol of hate, was discovered in Dix Hills.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, police said the swastika and other graffiti was posted Monday night during the snowstorm.
Several street signs were tagged and the swastika was spray painted on the garage door of a home, police said.
"If you came out that morning to go to work and found that on your garage, I think you'd be pretty disturbed. Why is someone targeting your home and drawing this offensive symbol on your house? I'd be personally offended," Suffolk Police Sgt. James Brierton told Hall. "It would appear someone was walking through the neighborhood, they damaged the property of the homeowner - the garage door - as well as town-owned property - the signs."
A Jewish family lives in the home, police said. Suffolk County Police Hate Crimes Unit detectives are involved in the investigation.
The defaced street signs will all need to be replaced.
"Stop signs, speed limit signs were issued the hashtag symbol, the pound symbol. Your basic five-point star was drawn," Brierton said.
Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
