Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison stepping down, source says
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. -- Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison is stepping down, a high-ranking law enforcement source with the department confirmed to CBS New York.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released a statement Friday morning, thanking Harrison for serving with "honor, integrity, and distinction."
"Because of his efforts, our communities are safer, the department is more equitable, accountable and transparent, and meaningful relationships have been fostered with our diverse communities," Bellone's statement read in part.
Harrison, 54, was sworn in in January 2022.
Soon after, he created a special joint task force dedicated to the Gilgo Beach murders, and in July of this year, suspect Rex Heuermann was arrested.
It's unclear when Harrison's last day will be or why he is leaving.
