New Digital Information Screens Debuting At More Subway Stops, Buses

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New digital information screens are being rolled out Friday at more subway stops and buses as part of the $27 billion, five-year MTA Capital Program.

The agency is debuting the new screens along eight stops on the N, Q and R lines in a 90-day trial phase to work out any kinks.

The MTA is looking to eventually expand the digital countdown clocks that have been installed on the numbered train lines to all 269 lettered line stations.

"These actions are the latest steps toward rebuilding and transforming the MTA into a unified, state-of-the-art transportation network that will meet the needs of current and future generations of New Yorkers," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. "With this new and updated technology, we'll help ensure riders have the information they need to get where they need to go."

Friday morning, 131 buses in Manhattan and Brooklyn will also be outfitted with digital information screens with the goal of 3,600 buses being upgraded in 2018.

Along with safety and schedule information, the MTA also notes the new screens can bring in revenue for the agency by providing a bright digital ads to a captive audience.
