Study Ranks Rt. 25 In Suffolk County As Most Dangerous For Pedestrians
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- For the second year in a row, Rt. 25 in Suffolk County has been named the most dangerous road for pedestrians in the region by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign.
As 1010 WINS' Holli Haerr reported, that wasn't a big surprise to Torri and Keanna, who often walk and said drivers can be careless.
"If you're a pedestrian they don't care, that's why people get hit," one of the girls said.
"The snow around it makes it harder because you actually have to walk in the street," the other said. "Like I would be an inch away from a car that's speeding."
The annual Tri-State Transportation Campaign study ranks roads based on pedestrian fatalities.
According to the study, Rt. 25 had 20 pedestrian deaths between 2011 and 2013. Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County came in at number 2 with 11 pedestrian deaths.
By comparison, Grand Concourse in the Bronx and Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn each had 10 deaths. Eight people were killed on Queens Boulevard in that time.
