Streit's Matzo Factory Prepares For One Last Passover On Lower East Side
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tours of the Streit's Matzo Factory have completely booked up as the Lower East Side institution prepares to move after 90 years.
As 1010 WINS' Kevin Rincon reported, Streit's has been operating out of the same factory for decades and after Passover, they'll be making matzo somewhere else.
"If we were to build a factory today the last place we'd put it is maybe here," said one of the co-owners.
The three cousins who own the family-run business plan to make a decision on a location by June, Rincon reported.
Regardless, of where they end up they're working hard to make sure the taste of their matzo will stay the same.
"The one thing we've been able to do this year is use other ovens to try to replicated our matzo," said one co-owner. "So, it is confirming the fact that we can make the move and our loyal customers will still like what's coming out of the oven."
Another sign of the times, Streit's has brought in a new spokeswoman: former "Real Housewives of New York" star Jill Zarin.
"Well I think when you think of a Jewish mother, I hope that you think of me...in a good way," Zarin said.
Streit's said it hopes Zarin will be able to reach out to the younger generation and remind them of their Jewish heritage.
As of now, the company plans to keep their staff during the move and increase production.
