NYPD: Woman In Critical Condition Following Stray-Bullet Shooting On Staten Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- More gun violence in New York City has left a Staten Island mother on life support, shot in the head by a stray bullet.

Police are now searching for the car involved in this drive-by shooting.

As CBS2's Andrea Grymes reports, investigators knelt down, searching through leaves for any evidence left behind. A shattered car window was just feet away from the apartment building where police say an innocent 52-year-old woman was shot in the head while standing in the lobby with her adult son and daughter.

CBS2 has been told the victim does not live in the building.

"I feel so bad because that's somebody's mother," said Park Hill resident Cecilia Sajeroy.

"I feel very, very bad, very pity for her," said Park Hill resident Prince Jay.

At the scene Monday night, visibly upset people consoled each other as police swarmed the area.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. on Park Hill Avenue near Sobel Court on Staten Island.

"There was a white SUV that circled the location several times before the rear driver's side passenger discharged numerous rounds," said NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison.

Police say the gunman fired at a group standing outside, but none of them were hit. Instead, a bullet went through both lobby doors, hitting the woman inside.

"The situation is kinda crazy out here. I hope whoever did that definitely gets caught," Jay said.

Investigators say the shooting appears to be gang motivated, with the same car involved in another shooting in Port Richmond three weeks ago.

"It is an area that is plagued by some gang activity and again, anyone please with information for this poor woman, call our Crime Stoppers tip line," said NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea.

Police say they have some surveillance video of the Kia Sorrento involved and are looking for more.

Shootings are up nearly 100% across the city this year, including in the 120th precinct.

There is a $2,500 reward being being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.
