Beatles Tribute Concert Held On Staten Island To Benefit Volunteer Group
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Beatles tribute concert was held on Staten Island Friday night, to benefit a local nonprofit.
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, the Beatles cover band the Blue Meanies played the 1966 album "Revolver" in its entirety in the Beatles Blast event at the St. George Theatre, at 35 Hyatt St. on Staten Island, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the album.
"They can play any Beatles song and they're really, really good," said Dennis McKeon, executive director of the nonprofit Where to Turn, which is sponsoring the event.
"Revolver" was released on Aug. 5, 1966, and includes classics such as "Taxman," "Eleanor Rigby," "Here, There, and Everywhere," "Yellow Submarine," "Good Day Sunshine," "Got to Get You Into My Life," and "Tomorrow Never Knows," among others. It was ranked third on the Rolling Stone magazine list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Where to Turn was founded to raise money for those impacted by the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Currently, most of the nonprofit's projects are on Staten Island.
"We do graffiti cleanups, we do lot cleanups, we do litter cleanups," McKeon siad.
The second act for the concert was to showcase local singers performing Beatles classics for the crowd.
