Trekkies Celebrate 'Star Trek' Anniversary At NYC Convention
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- "Star Trek" fans are celebrating the franchise's 50th anniversary at a weekend-long convention in Manhattan.
Star Trek: Missions kicked off at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on Friday and runs through Sunday.
The convention features interactive exhibits, a cosplay contest, and appearances by William Shatner, Walter Koenig, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, and more. The U.S. Postal Service is also getting in on the fun, launching a special "Star Trek Forever" stamp series.
Trekkie Craig said he was just 10 years old when he sat down with his father to watch the original "Star Trek" series with its parables about politics and morality, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.
"The chemistry and the writing of the scripts was just really something that wasn't on television prior," he said.
But it lasted only three years. Who would've guessed it would lead to 13 movies and five more series, the latest of which is set to premiere in January 2017 on CBS All Access, Stern reported.
A Trekkie from Kansas City said "Star Trek" will live long, and prosper.
"In 25 years we'll be here for the 75th anniversary," she said.
