Sources Tell CBS 2: Driver Arrested In Suspected DWI Crash In Levittown

LEVITTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An elderly man was struck and killed while on his way to work on Long Island and sources said the driver of the vehicle has been arrested on DWI charges, CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff reported.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown.

The elderly victim had just gotten off the bus and was crossing the street to the King Kullen supermarket, where he worked for the past six years, when he was struck and killed, Gusoff reported.

The driver remained on the scene and sources told CBS 2 he is being charged with drunk driving.

The incident occurred along a 16-mile stretch of Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County which is known as one of the region's most dangerous for walking. There have been more than a dozen fatalities in the past two years.

"I personally knew two people who died on Hempstead Turnpike, it just keeps happening," said Levittown resident Elexis Tannenbaum.

"It's not the first time, about a mile up the road by 7-Eleven a young kid got hit and there was an accident up the block not that long ago, it's like a mad dash," said witness Tommy Adrian.

Safety improvements have been underway on Hempstead Turnpike, but have not reached Levittown yet, Gusoff reported.

The victim's name is being withheld until his family is notified.
