Source To CBS2: Contractors Under Investigation For Allegedly Cheating Sandy Victims

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Claims have surfaced that government contractors have been making up documents to cheat victims of Superstorm Sandy.

A source told CBS2 that the contractors are accused of forging papers to deny homeowners money they deserve through the National Flood Insurance Program.

Thousands of homes were damaged in the storm more than two years ago.

As CBS2's Tony Aiello reported, a number of homeowners claim damage reports were rewritten to say hurricane damage was a result of structural defects rather than flooding.

CBS2 has learned that New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has launched a criminal investigation into the claims.

Schneiderman's office has declined to comment.
