Sorry, Yankees Fans: Morales Heads To Twins On 1-Year Deal
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If the New York Yankees are still interested in adding a big bat, they'll have to look elsewhere.
First baseman-DH Kendrys Morales has agreed to a one-year deal with the Minnesota Twins, according to WFAN and CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman.
Morales will make around $8 million on a prorated $12-million contract, Heyman reported.
The Yankees reportedly had some degree of interest in Morales. He would have instantly become the team's first option behind Mark Teixeira, who has battled soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist.
Milwaukee, Seattle and Texas were also said to be in the mix for the 30-year-old. The Twins won't have to give up a draft pick because the signing comes after the compensatory period of the MLB draft.
Many feared Morales wouldn't be the same player after breaking his ankle four years while celebrating a walk-off home run for the Los Angeles Angels. Morales missed the final 111 games of 2010 and all of 2011.
But he came back again productive in 2012 for the Angels, batting .273 with 22 home runs and 73 RBI in 134 games. He then jumped to the Mariners last season and hit .277 with 23 homers and 80 RBI in 156 games, half of which were played in pitcher-friendly Safeco Field.
Morales has 102 homers, 345 RBI and a .280 average during his seven-year career.
