Sneaker Con 2014 Draws Thousands Of 'Sneaker Heads' To Manhattan

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Instead of comic book heroes, fancy kicks drew thousands of people to Manhattan Saturday, CBS 2's Don Champion reported.

Marcus Russell was among the thousands who waited up to two hours to get into Sneaker Con 2014 at Pier 94, the event that centers around selling, trading and buying popular shoes.

"I came here last year and really liked it," Russell said.

Yari Huretas, of Staten Island, told CBS 2 Sneaker Con is a chance to buy sneakers in her small size. She proudly showed off some of her purchases and admits she's a so-called "sneaker head."

"A sneaker head is somebody who would not mind buying a new pair of sneakers every single day, no matter the cost," Huretas said.

All kinds of sneakers were up for sale, with more than 350 vendors on hand. As Champion reported, some sneakers are rather pricey, like the South Beach Lebrons, which were released on a limited basis and can sell for up to $2,000.

"Just the color and the whole history behind them and mostly because they're limited, you won't see a whole bunch of people walking around in them," Sneaker Con attendee Brian Purificato said of the shoes.

Organizers had to ditch a smaller venue where the event was held last year for another space nearly double the size to accommodate all the attendees, Champion reported.
