2-Alarm Fire Breaks Out In West 57th Street Building
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Dozens of firefighters were dispatched Monday afternoon as an extra-alarm fire ripped through a Midtown building.
The fire broke out just before 4 p.m. at 422 W. 57th St. The blaze was under control by 6 p.m.
Earlier, it had been raise to two alarms.
Thick smoke could be seen pouring out of the basement of the building, located between Ninth and Tenth avenues. The residential building is next door to the Trinity Presbyterian Church, just down the block from the Holiday Inn Midtown, and just a block east of the CBS Broadcast Center.
Police shut down 57th Street between Ninth and Tenth avenues, and also closed the sidewalk on the south side of 57th Street, while firefighters battled the blaze.
Smoke could be smelled throughout the area.
Multiple ambulances were dispatched to the scene, but no injuries were reported.
As of 6 p.m., the Fire Department was decontaminating the building due to possible asbestos inside.
The cause of the fire was under investigation early Monday evening.
