Slight Risk Of Tornadoes Forecast For Overnight Storms
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A severe storm system blowing into the Tri-State Area posed a minor threat for tornadoes during the overnight hours Tuesday into Wednesday.
CBS 2's Lonnie Quinn reported the light rain falling in and around New York City during the 11 p.m. hour was expected to pick up to moderate rainfall and storm activity around midnight.
But more severe weather that was pounding the Washington, D.C. area Tuesday evening was expected to blow northward, hitting New York City by around 4:30 a.m. and Hempstead, Long Island by 6:30 a.m. – give or take an hour, Quinn reported.
The storm system had a slight risk of producing tornadoes. The National Weather Service said the risk amounted to 5 percent for coastal areas, and 2 percent farther inland.
A coastal flood was also issued for the South Shore bays of Long Island, as well as the Rockaways and Brooklyn. Widespread minor flooding was anticipated during the Wednesday high tide cycle.
The storms were expected to be on the east end of Long Island by 8 a.m., and were expected to affect the morning commute for some Suffolk County residents. Otherwise, the storms were expected to have cleared in time for the morning commute, Quinn reported.
By midday Wednesday, partly sunny conditions were expected.
