Several Hurt, Including Eight Firefighters, In West Village 2-Alarm Fire
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Eight firefighters were hurt while battling a blaze that tore through a four-story building in the West Village Sunday afternoon.
Over 100 firefighters responded to reports of a fire in the mixed use residential building on Hudson Street just before 3:30 p.m.
Fire captain Dennis Valacamedus says it was smack dab in the middle of the Pride March route.
"I can't imagine a bigger nightmare than having a million people in the way of the fire," he said. "It's what we trained for. We're New York City firefighters. There's no mystery. We know what to expect."
Nearly a dozen people in total were hurt in the two-alarm fire between the first and second floors of the building.
One of the firefighters sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital.
It took nearly three hours to bring the blaze under control.
A ground floor restaurant was destroyed while apartments above sustained substantial damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
