Secaucus Mayor Threatens Lawsuit Against NFL For Breaking Contract

SECAUCUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - The mayor of a New Jersey town is throwing a flag at the NFL over the Super Bowl.

As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, the plan was for the league to use Secaucus High School.

"They were looking for a place to stage the people that would be on the field during the halftime show," Mayor Michael Gonnelli said.

He added the town had a contract with the NFL for the arrangement.

"The amount of money was $20,000, which was going to go back to education, which we thought was great," said Gonnelli.

There was also another $5,000 for the volunteer fire department, Haskell reported.

The league backed out of the deal at the last minute, said Gonnelli.

Gonnelli said he wrote a letter "asking the commissioner to reconsider and reimburse us for our expenses, the $20,000 and the $5,000."

Now, the town is considering a lawsuit.

"Breach of contract. It's a pretty simple complaint. We have a contract, they broke the contract with not even an explanation to us," Gonnelli told Haskell.

The mayor said the way the NFL treated New Jersey was "horrible," Haskell reported.

WCBS 880 reached out to the NFL for comment but has not heard back.

Super Bowl XLVIII was held earlier this month at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
