Search On For Driver After Hit-And-Run Accident Causes $20,000 In Damage To Freeport Home
FREEPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - The search is on for a hit-and-run driver who plowed into a house on Long Island, then took off.
As CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff reported, the incident happened while the Freeport homeowners were asleep. When they woke up the next morning, they said they didn't know what hit them.
The hole in the side of Albert and Myrta Adams' Freeport home was a mystery at first, Gusoff reported.
"I heard 'boom!'" Albert Adams said.
The retired couple, used to the din of traffic, said they didn't think anything of the sound.
"I said 'honey, you hear that noise?' And he said yeah, but he don't get up," Myrta Adams told Gusoff.
She then got up to start Easter cooking and found a hole in their house.
"It was a big hit," said Myrta Adams.
Their den was in shambles. Furniture was overturned and vases were cracked. From inside the house, they could see outdoors.
The couple figured out what caused all the destruction when they uncovered a Nissan car emblem amid the wreckage.
"We are looking for a Nissan, possibly an Altima, a Rogue or a Quest," Nassau County Police Det. Paul Read told Gusoff.
Police are now canvassing after car parts were left strewn everywhere.
The hit-and-run accident caused more than $20,000 in damage to the Adams' house. Their home's brick exterior was cracked and walls are bent out of shape, along with track marks on the lawn and uprooted shrubs.
Engineers have told the Adams' the house is structurally sound.
The intersection of Wallace Street and Claurome Place is clearly marked with reflective signs but has been plagued by speeders, Gusoff reported.
The Adams' said in 28 years in their home, no one has ever missed the turn.
"Thank God that I was not there on that side with my couch watching TV," Myrta Adams said.
As part of the investigation, police are checking for surveillance video and checking out body shops servicing a Nissan with front end damage as they search for the driver who fled.
