Search continues in East River for missing 13-year-old

NEW YORK -- The family of a missing teenager who police say disappeared in the East River last week needs help from the public.

They are asking anyone to step forward and provide information. They did so as his worried parents tried Monday to hold on to hope.

It has been three days since the NYPD started searching the river for Kavion Godfrey. He was last seen was Friday afternoon. Since then, his worried family has spent most of their time near the river, hoping for his safe return.

The NYPD Harbor Unit continued to search the river for the boy on Monday night.

"To whomever was out here, come forward, please. Talk to us so we can get an understanding. Please, that's all we ask," said Laquana Badger, the missing teen's mother.

Badger is worried sick.

"Help us find my son," she said.

Kavion's mother said her son called her on Friday afternoon, asking if he could go to a soccer game in East River Park with his coach and friends. Shortly after, she got another call from the coach saying Kavion was missing.

"I got here, his bag is here, his clothes, his phone," Badger said.

Police said the 13-year-old entered the river at East River Park near Houston Street. They launched a search both in the water and on the ground.

"It has been a roller coaster, to say the least," Badger said. "I want him to be safe. I want to find him."

Badger said her son loves basketball, his family, and his friends.

"My son is so bright. He was always happy y'all. He made me happy," she said.

That happiness is on hold as many search to get him back home.

"I will do whatever it takes. I will stay here for as long as it takes. I will be here," Badger said.

The NYPD's search depends on the tide and the weather. The boats will continue Tuesday.
