First Day Of Classes At New Sandy Hook Elementary School
SANDY HOOK, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- It's the first day of classes at the brand new Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
The new building was constructed on the site, but further back on the property, where the former school once stood. The old school was the scene of the 2012 shooting massacre that killed 20 students and six staff members.
Classroom doors at the new, gated school have deadbolt locks and the glass is impact resistant. There are also surveillance cameras throughout the building.
The original building was demolished in 2013 after a public vote. Since then, students have attended classes at a temporary location in nearby Monroe.
Construction of the new school was completed in 2015. The $50 million project was paid for by a grant from the state.
