Police: Shooting Leaves 1 San Diego Officer Dead, Another Injured
SAN DIEGO (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities said one police officer has died and another was injured after being shot in a San Diego neighborhood.
Chief Shelley Zimmerman said the gang suppression officers reported they were making a traffic stop shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday and almost immediately radioed for emergency cover.
Responding officers put one of the wounded cops into a patrol car and rushed off to a hospital but efforts to save him failed. Zimmerman said that officer had a wife and two children.
"It is with a very sad heart that we announce the death of one of our Officers tonight," the police department said on Twitter Friday. "Pray for his family."

The chief said they are hopeful the wounded officer will survive. That officer's wife is with him at the hospital.

One suspect was in custody, CBS San Diego affiliate KFMB-TV reported. A search was on for any others who might have been involved.
The shooting comes as law enforcement around the country is on high alert following the killings of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge earlier month.
