Jersey City excited to celebrate Saint Peter's after Cinderella run

JERSEY CITY -- The greatest Cinderella story in NCAA Tournament history ended Sunday when the Saint Peter's Peacocks lost to North Carolina 69-49 in the Elite Eight.

The Saint Peter's campus was quiet Monday, but plans are being made to celebrate the team's remarkable season, CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reported.

Some fans described the past week and a half as an emotional roller coaster ride, which they will cherish.

"It's almost impossible to put into words what this team has brought to us so far, like, emotionally and everything else," one fan said.

"They will always win in our hearts," said another.

"Not everyone can make the March Madness tournament, and for Coach Holloway and our Peacocks to make it all the way to the Elite Eight is fantastic and probably one of the greatest runs that we'll probably see in basketball history," said Sebastian Baldissern, a sophomore at Saint Peter's.

Saint Peter's made it further than any other 15 seed in tournament history, a feat that surprised even the players.

"We've got a lot of support and this is, just to do what we did is just incredible," guard Daryl Banks III said.

"It's just historical and we're blessed for that," forward KC Ndefo said.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said the city is incredibly proud of the team's success.

"This is the first team in NCAA history to do this. You have had hundreds if not thousands of teams participate in this tournament and nobody's been able to achieve what they did and everybody sees a little bit of themselves in this team," Fulop said.

The mayor said a parade will take place Friday afternoon. Details were still being worked out, but the parade is expected to start at Lincoln Park and end at Saint Peter's University where the team will receive keys to the city.
