Coffee.

It's that stuff you drink in the morning in order to be a functioning member of America's workforce.

Beer.

It's that stuff you drink in the evening in order to deal with being a functioning member of America's workforce.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to partake in your pre- and post-work fuel at the same spot?

Give a warm, wide-awake welcome to the Roost, a recently opened coffee shop in the East Village that cleverly hides a big bar in the back. In the bright light of day, this East Village spot has everything you need to achieve morning consciousness: walls of shining subway tiles, freshly baked sticky buns, free WiFi, perfectly foamed cappuccinos, croissants from Balthazar, and window seats ideal for people-watching the denizens of Avenue B.

But after you punch out for the day (or just stick around 'til it's an appropriate hour to drink), come back and slink through the parlor and past a faux fireplace to a set of reclaimed sliding barn doors that conceal the booze-filled treasure chest out back.

An oasis of plush leather sofas, vintage pavilion skylights, dark wood and exposed brick, this warm and comfortable hideout harkens back to the secret social hangouts of old-timey New York – an ideal spot for throwing back some craft beer and a few fingers of whiskey in order to forgot your day of analyzing Excel files and revenue reports. Made from the wall and beams of an old barn, the refurbished wood bar carries plenty of brown stuff (they've got a great bourbon selection) and a blackboard touting local beers from the greater New York region, like Coney Island Seas the Day IPL, Empire Amber Ale, Bronx Belgian Pale Ale, and Alphabet City Easy Blonde.

It's the best use of a barn since Kevin Bacon went HAM in Footloose.
