Victim Identified In Fatal Route 3 Crash In Rutherford
RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The person killed when a tractor-trailer hit an overpass on Route 3 in Rutherford and dropped its cargo box onto a car has been identified.
James Hart III, 39, was the motorist killed in the Monday afternoon accident.
The stretch of highway closed Monday afternoon when a shipping container on a tractor-trailer hit the Orient Way overpass just west of Route 17 and the Meadowlands Sports Complex.
Crews worked through the night to repair the damage and the road.
The container detached and crushed a car that was next to the vehicle, killing the motorist. Exclusive video taken by CBS2's Elise Finch showed the large container on top of the car under the overpass.
Witnesses said they've never seen anything like it.
"It was so scary, it was unbelievable and especially the driver of the truck running down the highway, like an empty highway with his hands on his head, screaming and crying," witness Michael Mazzaccaro said. "I just saw the car underneath, the trailer crushed and the horn just honking constantly."
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
