Route 18 in Monmouth County shut down for hours after tractor trailer strikes school bus

MARLBORO TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A tractor trailer truck crash shut down roads during Tuesday evening rush hour in Monmouth County.

It happened on Route 18 in Marlboro Township around 3 p.m.

Police say a tractor trailer tanker overturned, spilling fuel onto the highway, after the driver struck a school bus that was traveling southbound.

The driver of the tractor trailer was airlifted to Jersey Shore Medical Center to be treated for injuries.

Police say there were no students on the school bus at the time of the crash.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 18 were closed between Route 79 and Route 520 for several hours while police investigated.

The cause of the crash is still unknown at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
