Major Power Outage Hits Rochdale Village In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Thousands were left in the dark and some were stranded in elevators when a glitch knocked out power to an apartment complex in Queens.

The FDNY and NYPD responded to Rochdale Village in Springfield Gardens around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The village has its own power source and some sort of glitch in the system left more than 25,000 residents without power, CBS2's Christine Sloan reported.

"No air conditioning, it got hot so I had to walk down 12 flights of stairs," one resident said.

Firefighters had to check 129 elevators to see if anyone was stuck.

"We ended up removing four civilians from elevators," Battalion Chief Steven Brown said.

No injuries were reported.

Building officials said they were upgrading the power system when the outage occurred, Sloan reported.

Power was restored within a couple of hours.
