Riverdale Residents Digging Out From Mounds Of Snow
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Winter 2014: Can you dig it?
The warmer conditions on Wednesday provided the first chance for some in the Riverdale section of the Bronx to dig out from piles of snow.
As CBS 2's Scott Rapoport reported, cars are still iced in along the streets of the hard-hit neighborhood.
One man out shoveling on Wednesday said his car has been buried in the snow for three weeks.
"The worst winter since I was a kid," Mel Goodman said. "I dug for about 20, 25 minutes and I realized I had the wrong car. It was another gray car that looked just like it."
Mike Lally's car as been stuck in ice for a week. He used three different shovels to dig it out.
"You gotta break up the ice. Use the shovel and then you have to have something to push it," he told Rapoport.
Navigating through the narrow, icy streets has proven challenging, Rapoport reported.
Residents said school buses take up most if not all of the available road, making it hard to get around.
An oil truck could barely make it around the curve on 242nd Street and Dash Place on Wednesday, Rapoport reported.
"There's no way to make it," the truck driver said. "Too narrow."
The CBS 2 crew helped PJ Manning up after he slipped and landed flat on his back.
"I just slipped on the ice trying to get into my car, but I'm OK. Thanks for pulling me up there, guys," he said.
And then there's the concern of alternate side of the street parking which stars again on Saturday.
