Retiring Carolyn McCarthy Hopes To See Congress Pass Gun Control, Tax Cuts In Final Weeks
GARDEN CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- As Carolyn McCarthy gets set to retire from Congress, she has a wish list of legislation she would like to see passed this term.
"I would love to see background checks and closing the gun show loophole on the federal level," the congresswoman told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.
McCarthy, who is completing her ninth term, built a reputation as a staunch gun-control advocate on Capitol Hill. The 70-year-old Democrat from Mineola ran for office after her husband, Dennis, was shot to death in the 1993 Long Island Rail Road massacre.
McCarthy said she'd also like to see Congress pass bills to fund the government for 2015 and cut taxes for middle-income families.
"I'm hearing that both sides are working together, and Republicans and Democrats are trying to get some things done," she said. "And hopefully this last election showed that we all have to work together."

McCarthy, a lifelong smoker, chose not to seek re-election after announcing in June 2013 that she had lung cancer.
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice was elected to her seat last month.
