Reports: Revis On His Way Out Of Tampa; Might He Return To Jets?
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Might a Darrelle Revis reunion in East Rutherford be on the horizon?
Buckle your seat belts, folks.
According to multiple reports, the Buccaneers are looking to trade Revis. If Tampa Bay is unable to deal the All-Pro cornerback, it's likely that he will be released by general manager Jason Licht.
With Dee Milliner being a question mark and the Jets having just released Antonio Cromartie, Revis could be a logical option to boost the Jets' secondary. Plus, it's pretty much understood that head coach Rex Ryan loves Revis.
Revis apparently would "love" to play for Ryan and the Jets again, league sources told Newsday and the Daily News.
The Jets have been mentioned in talks for several free agent corners, including Alterraun Verner and Captain Munnerlyn.
The Jets simply trading for Revis won't be easy as it has been reported that several teams, including the salary cap-flexible Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns, have interest.
HAVEN'T WE BEEN DOWN THIS ROAD BEFORE?
On April 21, 2013, the Jets traded Revis to the Buccaneers for the 13th pick in the 2013 draft -- which became AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Sheldon Richardson -- and a 2014 conditional fourth-round pick. Revis subsequently signed a six-year, $96 million contract extension with the Bucs.
However, after the season ended the Bucs attempted to get Revis to restructure the remaining $80 million on his deal, but ran into problems.
Revis is due a $1.5 million roster bonus on Wednesday. If the 28-year-old superstar is still on Tampa Bay's roster at 4:01 p.m. on that day, the fourth-round pick that the organization sent the Jets in last year's trade would become a third-rounder.
Despite a propensity for holding out, the shutdown corner was immensely popular among Gang Green fans during his tenure with the Jets. He was drafted 14th overall by New York back in 2007.
With the Jets, Revis was a Pro Bowl selection from 2008-11. He was an All-Pro selection from 2009-11 and was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.
In his first -- and potentially only -- season with the Buccaneers, the 5-foot-11, 198-pounder recorded 50 combined tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl and was named the Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year.
