Report: Yankees Working On New Deal For GM Brian Cashman

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Despite the Yankees missing the playoffs for consecutive seasons for the first time since 1992-93, the organization and general manager Brian Cashman are working on a new deal, according to ESPN.

Cashman just wrapped up his 17th season as GM, and his contract is set to expire on October 31. According to the network, the executive still has a very strong relationship with the Steinbrenner family.

After missing the postseason in 2013 for the first time since 2008, the Yankees went out and spent $471 million in free agency.

It didn't work out as planned.

Masahiro Tanaka, who signed a seven-year, $155 million contract, was brilliant before getting injured. But high-priced signings Brian McCann ($85 million over five years) and Carlos Beltran ($45 million over three years) struggled mightily, and other additions such as Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts were disappointments.

Cashman made some moves ahead of the trade deadline -- acquiring third baseman Chase Headley, infielder/outfielder Martin Prado, shortstop Stephen Drew and starting pitchers Brandon McCarthy and Chris Capuano -- but it wasn't enough as the Bombers fell short of the second American League Wild Card berth.

Now a new era of Yankees baseball will begin with Derek Jeter's departure. Alex Rodriguez, suspended for all of last season, is expected to be the starting third baseman in 2015 and could give the Yanks a much-needed offensive boost.

Manager Joe Girardi, who was hired ahead of the 2008 campaign, still has three years remaining on his four-year contract.

Since being hired as general manager in 1998, Cashman's Yankees have won 12 AL East titles, six pennants and four World Series.
