Report: Yankees, Chase Headley In Talks About New Contract
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Yes, Alex Rodriguez is coming back next season.
But with A-Rod a bit of an enigma at this time after missing all of 2014, the Yankees want to have another competent third baseman on the roster.
The competent third baseman in mind might already be here.
According to CBSSports.com/WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman, the club and Chase Headley are discussing a new deal.
Headley, a free agent, was acquired by New York from the Padres on July 22 for infielder Yangervis Solarte and minor-league pitcher Rafael De Paula. Because he was traded during the season, Headley is ineligible to receive a qualifying offer, though it's unlikely he would receive one under normal circumstances.
After coming over to the Bronx, the 30-year-old batted .262 with six homers and 17 RBIs in 191 at-bats. Overall he hit .243 with 13 homers and 49 RBIs. The 2012 Gold Glove Award winner also played his usual outstanding defense.
A-Rod, at the advanced age of 39, will likely see plenty of time at designated hitter. He might also play some first base.
Pablo Sandoval is an intriguing option for general manager Brian Cashman, though the free agent figures to cost a ton, and he reportedly wants to re-sign with the world champion Giants.
