Report: NJ TRANSIT To Propose 9 Percent Fare Hike
WESTWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A legislative report says fare revenue for NJ TRANSIT will top $1 billion next year, but fare hikes could be on the rise.
Sources tell the Wall Street Journal the agency will propose a 9 percent fare hike along with service adjustments in the face of an $80 million budget gap
"Who's happy about it? No one's happy about it, but we understand it's still the best way to travel," one commuter told WCBS 880's Paul Murnane.
"Yeah, well what do we get in return for it?" another said.
Some riders told CBS2 earlier this year they're already seeing a deterioration in service and questioned why they should be asked to pay more.
Among their complaints: buses and trains
The loss of a $300 million subsidy from the Turnpike Authority is looming and replacing that could force faces up by 30 percent or more, Murnane reported.
