Report: Knicks Make Rambis Lucrative Offer To Be Fisher's Top Assistant
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Derek Fisher is his own man, but without any head coaching experience the Knicks figure he's going to need a hand from time to time.
Who better than Kurt Rambis, a guy even more used to winning than Fisher is?
The Knicks are reportedly trying to lure Rambis, currently an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers, to New York to be Fisher's top assistant.
Rambis, who went 24-13 as the Lakers' head coach back in 1998-99 and was the bench boss for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2009-11, has been offered a four-year deal worth approximately $1.2 million annually, the NY Post reported Thursday.
The offer rivals the one Tyronn Lue recently accepted from Cleveland. The Cavaliers are reportedly paying Lue $6.4 million over four years to be their top assistant.
Rambis, who is considered an expert at employing Phil Jackson's famed triangle offense, is also in the mix to be the Lakers' next head coach, following the resignation of Mike D'Antoni at the end of the 2013-14 regular season. Rambis worked as an assistant during Jackson's stints as Lakers' head coach, winning championships in 2001-02 and 2008-09.
As a player, Rambis was a valuable role player off the bench, helping the Lakers win four championships in the 1980s.
He was drafted 58th overall by the Knicks in 1980, but was immediately waived.
