Trump Delays ICE Raids Planned For New York, Other US Cities

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- President Donald Trump has called for the delay of mass Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids planned in cities across the country, including New York.

The ICE operation targeting undocumented families was reportedly set to begin Sunday.

Saturday afternoon, the president said the operation would be delayed for two weeks to give lawmakers time to discuss border solutions.

Three administration officials told The Associated Press the operation had been canceled because details had leaked in the media and officer safety could be jeopardized. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly on the operation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

New York City was one of at least 10 cities set to be raided. Other cities include Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago and Miami.

ICE plans to round up more than 2,000 undocumented immigrants, including families, who have been given final deportation orders.

Trump earlier this week tweeted that an operation was upcoming and said the agency would begin to remove "millions" of people.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio are among elected officials across the country opposed to the raids.

"The Trump Administration's impending blitz of ICE raids across the country, including New York, is shameful, and we will fight back to protect our immigrant families," Cuomo said in a tweet Saturday morning.
