Report: Giants Receive Permission To Interview Raheem Morris For DC Position

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Now that Perry Fewell has been fired, the search is on for a new defensive coordinator.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Thursday morning that the Giants requested permission to interview Raheem Morris for the position.

Morris, a New Jersey native who went to Hofstra, is currently the Redskins' defensive backs coach. The Washington Post's Mike Jones reported on Thursday afternoon that the Redskins have decided to grant Morris permission to speak with New York.

Prior to being hired by the Redskins in 2012, the 38-year-old was the head coach of the Buccaneers. He went 17-31 with no playoff appearances in his three seasons as head coach.

The Giants' defense struggled mightily in 2014. New York finished ranked 29th in yards allowed and gave up 400 points for just the fifth time in franchise history.

According to multiple reports, Steve Spagnuolo is also a candidate to replace Fewell. Spagnuolo, of course, was the Giants' defensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008. He was the architect of the defense that stopped Tom Brady and the Patriots' dream of a 19-0 season in Super Bowl XLII.

Spagnuolo is currently the Ravens' secondary coach.

Newsday's Tom Rock reported on Wednesday that other potential candidates for the vacant position include 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and Bills defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

The Giants finished 6-10 this past season and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive time.
