Free-Agent RB Chris Johnson Takes Physical With Jets
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Are the New York Jets about to add a big-name rusher?
Free-agent running back Chris Johnson was seen Tuesday at the team's training facility in Florham Park, N.J., according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Johnson had a physical with the Jets on Monday, a source told WFAN radio host Craig Carton.
His visit comes on the heels of his release from the Tennessee Titans earlier this month. The former first-round pick out of East Carolina had his best season in 2009, rushing for 2,006 yards, good for sixth all-time. Only seven players have rushed for more than 2,000 yards in a single season.
The Jets are "one of the few serious suitors" remaining for Johnson's services, according to the New York Daily News. The 28-year-old was in New York last week, though he said it was for personal reasons.
Johnson is coming off a down year, averaging just 3.9 yards per carry in 2013. But he would be a definite upgrade in the Jets' backfield, with the team reportedly thinking of platooning him with Chris Ivory to form a powerful one-two combination.
Johnson has rushed for over 1,000 yards in all six of his seasons, joining Barry Sanders, Curtis Martin, LaDainian Tomlinson, Eric Dickerson and Corey Dillon as the only players to do so.
He has 7,965 career rushing yards to go along with 272 receptions and 58 total touchdowns. The three-time Pro Bowler set an all-time record in 2009 with 2,509 yards from scrimmage.
If Johnson signs with Gang Green, he'd be joining just in time for the first offseason workout of the year on April 21.
