Report: Number Of Bird Strikes Going Up At Tri-State Area Airports
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Bird strikes affecting flights are on the rise in the Tri-State area.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, a new report suggests the problem keeps getting worse.
There were 175 bird strikes last year at LaGuardia Airport -- the most since the FAA started tracking the incidents in 1990.
Another record was set at Newark Airport with 177 strikes, and at JFK there were 210 incidents last year, Hall reported.
"And that can take a long time in order to identify exactly where the birds are coming from and how the planes can fly differently in order to protect passengers," said Claire Holmes, deputy executive director of Global Gateway Alliance
Only 11 of the bird strikes at all three airports resulted in damaged planes.
