Report: A-Rod Thinks Substance From Bosch Could Have Been Placebo
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Alex Rodriguez did some more apologizing on Tuesday, but this story is far from over.
We still don't know the details of what substances A-Rod did or didn't take, and we don't know how the rest of the 14-time All-Star's career will play out on the field.
But one thing's for sure: This just keeps getting more and more interesting.
In a story for ESPN The Magazine, which was released on Wednesday, writer J.R. Moehringer said Rodriguez believes Anthony Bosch might have given him "sugar and lies," aka a placebo.
"Only me," the 39-year-old told Moehringer, according to ESPN.com ahead of the story's release. "Only a dope like me would do that stuff and have the two worst statistical seasons of my career."
The exact quote did not appear in ESPN The Magazine's story.
Bosch, the former owner of the Biogenesis of America clinic in Florida, was sentenced to four years in prison on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute testosterone in October.
Rodriguez was suspended for the entire 2014 season due to his ties to performance-enhancing substances, and according to Moehringer he considered retiring in the early stage of his suspension.
The slugger has also seen a therapist, Moehringer reports. The ESPN writer says that the doctor is "one of the two people who know(s) something close to the whole story."
"I regret that my actions made the situation worse than it needed to be," Rodriguez said in a handwritten note on Tuesday. "To Major League Baseball, the Yankees, the Steinbrenner family, the players' association and you, the fans, I can only say I'm sorry."
Rodriguez is owed $61 million over the next three years. He's expected to be the Yankees' designated hitter in 2015, with Chase Headley starting at third base.
