NJ Red Light Camera Pilot Program Comes Up On Expiration Date
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - There are 73 red light cameras in New Jersey and come next month, none of them will be used.
"The law that established the red light camera program called for a five-year pilot program," Department of Transportation Spokesman Steve Shapiro told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell.
The program expires on December 16.
In Springfield, where a camera sits at the intersection of Morris and Maple avenues, drivers are thrilled.
"That's awesome. I'm really happy about that," one driver said.
Haskell: "Do you think these cameras make the intersections safer?
Woman: "No, I think people actually speed up."
Supporters feel drivers are less likely to run red lights if there is a camera.
In August, a state judiciary spokeswoman announced one of the operators of red light cameras in New Jersey, American Traffic Solutions, was having computer issues between May 28 and June 30.
An ATS spokesman says a server configuration change caused the glitch.
Because of that, the 17,000 violations were not served and fall outside the mandated 90-day notification window.
